Track Your Personal License Expiration Separately From Ohio’s Fishing Regulation Calendar
An Ohio one-year fishing license is valid for 365 days from its purchase date. It does not automatically expire when the state’s annual fishing-regulation booklet ends on February 28.
This calendar separates personal license renewal dates from statewide regulation changes, Lake Erie seasonal limits, trout stocking periods, frog and turtle seasons, and Ohio Free Fishing Days.
When Does an Ohio Fishing License Expire?
A one-year Ohio fishing license is valid for 365 days from the date of purchase. One-year and multiyear licenses remain valid from purchase until the expiration date printed on the license.
The 2026–27 Ohio Fishing Regulations are effective from March 1, 2026 through February 28, 2027. That regulation period controls the current rules, but it does not replace the individual expiration date printed on an angler’s license.
Ohio’s 2026 Free Fishing Days were Saturday, June 20 and Sunday, June 21. The license waiver applied to Ohio residents, while normal size, daily-limit, method, access and boating rules remained in force.
The current 2026–27 guide does not list the next year’s Free Fishing Days. Use only dates officially announced by the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Keep These Ohio Fishing Dates Separate
A one-year license lasts 365 days from purchase. The printed date controls.

Specified river sections have special spring rules during March and April. Depending on the exact section, restrictions include sunrise-to-sunset fishing and a single-hook requirement.
Fishing only from sunrise to sunset
This seasonal restriction applies to specifically described areas of the Maumee, Sandusky, Portage and Mahoning rivers from March 1 through April 30, 2026.
Use the exact landmarks in the current guide. Do not apply the restriction to an entire river without checking the listed boundaries.
No line with more than a single hook
Specified spring sections prohibit double and treble hooks and limit hook dimensions during the seasonal period.
Review both the fishing-hour list and the hook-restriction list because the geographic descriptions are not identical.
Ohio Rainbow Trout Stocking Calendar
Ohio scheduled rainbow trout releases during March through May 2026, subject to waters being ice-free and accessible. Individual lakes can have youth-only periods, delayed adult access or property-specific dates.
March
Stockings begin at listed waters as conditions allow. Check the exact location and date before traveling.
April
Many spring stockings and youth events occur. Review whether adults must wait until a later date.
May
The spring stocking schedule continues at listed waters before the program’s seasonal period ends.

Open Ohio trout stocking datesDoes Ohio Have One Statewide Fishing Season?
Ohio does not use one universal opening and closing date for every fish and every water. Many statewide fisheries remain available throughout the year under daily and minimum-size limits.
Seasonal dates become especially important on Lake Erie, specified spring river sections, frogs, turtles, stocked waters, border waters and site-specific lakes.
Statewide waters
Start with the statewide species table when the water is not covered by a more specific listing.
Lake Erie district
Check seasonal limits, perch zones and tributary boundaries separately.
Ohio River
Use the correct Western or Eastern Unit and the applicable shoreline or boat rule.
Site-specific waters
Named lakes and river sections can have special limits, methods, hours or seasons.
Frogs and turtles
These have defined opening and closing dates in the annual guide.
Emergency changes
Closures, harmful algal blooms, construction and safety orders can affect access after a booklet is published.

Practical Ohio Fishing Calendar Scenarios
A resident purchased an annual license in October
The license does not automatically expire on February 28 or December 31. It remains valid until the printed expiration based on the 365-day term.
Best action: enter the printed date into the renewal planner.
The regulation booklet changes while the license remains valid
The angler does not need to repurchase solely because a new guide begins, but must follow the new regulations.
Best action: download the new guide before the first March trip.
A nonresident visits during Ohio Free Fishing Days
The 2026 statewide waiver was for Ohio residents. A nonresident should not assume the resident event removed the license requirement.
Best action: buy the appropriate nonresident product unless another exemption applies.
A Lake Erie trip crosses a seasonal-change date
The legal daily limit or minimum size can differ before and after the date change.
Best action: check each fishing day separately and update the boat’s regulation card.
A family visits a newly stocked trout lake
The stocking listing may include youth-only periods or a later adult opening.
Best action: read the complete stocking note, not only the date.
The license expires during a multiday trip
The angler needs valid coverage for each day of fishing.
Best action: renew before departure instead of waiting until the printed final day.
