Lake Erie does not use one simple year-round fishing limit. Walleye have a 15-inch minimum, yellow perch limits change by longitude, and the black bass limit becomes much stricter during the spring spawning period.

Do You Need an Ohio Fishing License for Lake Erie?
Most anglers age 16 or older need a valid Ohio fishing license to fish in Ohio waters of Lake Erie. This includes people fishing from an Ohio shoreline, pier, private boat or charter boat unless a specific Ohio exemption applies.
People younger than 16 do not need to purchase a license. Ohio residents may also fish without purchasing a license during Ohio Free Fishing Days on June 20 and 21, 2026, but all Lake Erie size and daily limits remain in effect.
A charter reservation does not normally replace the customer’s personal fishing license. The captain’s fishing-guide license and boat decal authorize the guide’s operation; each customer who fishes should carry their own valid license unless individually exempt.
Fishing in Michigan, Pennsylvania or Canadian water requires a separate jurisdiction check. An Ohio license should not be treated as permission to cross the international or another state’s fishing boundary.

How the Six-Walleye Limit Works
Daily bag limit
An angler may take or possess up to six walleye, saugeye and sauger singly or in combination during the current Lake Erie limit period.
Minimum total length
Each retained walleye-group fish must measure at least 15 inches in total length.
One limit per day
Returning to shore, changing boats or moving between ports does not create a second daily limit.

The announced pamphlet applies to anglers fishing Ohio waters of Lake Erie or landing at an Ohio port.

Lake Erie conditions can become dangerous quickly
Check wind speed, wind direction, wave height, thunderstorms, fog and water temperature before leaving. Establish a cancellation threshold instead of deciding after the boat has launched.
